Bloomsburg Baseball Drops Exhibition Opener in Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, VA--The Bloomsburg University baseball team opened its 2006 season with a 9-6 loss to the Apprentice School at the Builders Tournament in Newport News, VA. The game is considered an exhibition since the Apprentice School does not offer four-year degrees and will not count in the official stats of the team.

The Huskies, playing their first game for new coach Mike Collins, fell behind 4-0 through four innings before scoring three times in the fifth to make it a 4-3 game. The Apprentice School extended its lead to 9-3 after getting four in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth, but the Huskies cut the lead to three, 9-6, with three runs in the eighth. Bloomsburg did get its lead-off runner on in the ninth, but could not score.

Leading the Bloomsburg offense was Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown), who went 2-4 with two RBI, while Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/Msg. Bonner) was 1-4 with two RBI. In addition, Vinnie James (Bristol/Bristol) went 1-3 with an RBI. Senior Rob Watlock (Plains/Coughlin) was 1-3 with a run scored for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg will begin its official season with a game at 9 a.m. against Lock Haven University.
